HempMeds® Brasil Fills Doctor Symposium in Sao Paulo to Capacity

Medical Marijuana, Inc. portfolio company, HempMeds® Brasil furthers its community outreach and educational efforts aimed at doctors and patients in the country with widely attended event.

On August 15, 2017, HempMeds® Brasil hosted an completely filled Doctor Symposium in Sao Paulo, Brazil – the company’s second such event this year in the country. The meeting brought together doctors from different specialties: such as neurology, pediatrics, neuropediatrics and psychiatry, as well as researchers who have cannabidiol and its effects as an object of study.

HempMeds® Brasil used the event to personally introduce the company to the local medical community. The company connected with physicians in the region to educate them on CBD and the import process and the efficacy of a CBD oil treatment as an option.

The event, which garnered vast media coverage across Brazil, was attended by 50 doctors, the event’s full capacity. The doctors in attendance were all interested in CBD as a treatment option and came to the event with the goal of learning best practices for prescribing CBD products.

The event featured renowned medical experts like Dr. Saul Garza Morales, pediatric researcher and neurologist in Mexico, and pioneers in the CBD industry like Dr. Stuart Titus, President and CEO of Medical Marijuana, Inc.

Dr. Saúl Garza Morales has more than 25 years of experience in public health institutions and has published more than 70 scientific articles on neurodevelopmental development and childhood epilepsy. In 2012, Dr. Garza was the winner of the annual Pharmaceutical Research Award for the clinical development of a new molecule for the treatment of epilepsy.

At the Brazil event, Dr. Garza presented the positive results his recently published study of THC-free CBD oil, RSHO-X™, in the treatment of refractory epilepsy – specifically Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. He also addressed his observations and experience with CBD in the control of autism and the latest news regarding CBD research.

Dr. Titus, a respected leader of the CBD industry, revealed the specific therapeutic benefits of CBD. Dr. Stuart Titus also discussed the impact that CBD can have on patients’ quality of life, including the biology of the endocannabinoid system, the benefits of hemp as a source of cannabinoids, and the CBD oil import process in Brazil.

Also in attendance was CBD parent advocate Norberto Fischer, who shared his family’s struggle to save their daughter Anny, helping to legalize CBD oil in Brazil in the process. The story of the Fischers’ fight for CBD began here in the U.S. with a connection with Hope4Harper and ends 5000 miles away with a court case victory that deemed it inhumane to keep CBD oil from Anny. The two families, connected by their daughters, both suffering from epilepsy, finally met face to face last year.

On August 18, an online article from Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian newspaper O Globo discussed how the symposium successfully brought together doctors from different specialties interested in learning about the medical value of CBD and how to legally import CBD into the country and prescribe it for patients.

Titled “HempMeds® Brasil Brings Together Physicians and Researchers to Discuss Therapeutic Use of Cannabidiol,”  the article was picked up by several other major news outlets across Brazil.

Caroline Heinz, HempMeds® Brasil Operations Director, was quoted in the article saying, “Our intention in promoting meetings such as this is, above all, to clarify the regulatory processes necessary for the importation and prescription of cannabidiol, in addition to joining efforts so that the medical community knows its properties and for Brazilian citizens to have access to this therapy in a way more uncomplicated.”

Heinz believes that initiatives such as these are essential in bringing about an improvement in the treatment of conditions such as autism, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy.

During the event, the company also announced that it appointed Junior S. Gibelli as Director of Medical Affairs to continue facilitating relationships with doctors across Brazil and helping to put beneficial CBD products into the hands of patients who need it most.

The company’s first symposium on medical cannabis was held in April of 2017 in Rio de Janeiro with the similar goal to educate health professionals on the therapeutic uses of cannabis. Like the Sao Paulo event last week, this earlier event featured renowned medical experts and pioneers in the field like Dr. Saul Garza Morales and Dr. Stuart Titus.
