Last week, Medical Marijuana, Inc.’s international subsidiary HempMeds® Mexico became the first company ever to have a cannabis-based product subsidized by a government in Mexico. HempMeds® Mexico reached this milestone on August 17, 2017, just over a year after the company shipped its unique THC-free hemp oil product, RSHO-X™, to Mexico for the first time.
Having one of HempMeds® Mexico’s products subsidized by the government in Mexico is an important step towards normalization of cannabis treatments as the country establishes its new policies following Mexico’s legalization of medical cannabis on June 19, 2017. The country’s new medical marijuana law now allows the use of cannabis medicinally as long as it contains less than 1% THC. This 1% threshold potentially permits the import and use of all Medical Marijuana, Inc. CBD hemp oil products in Mexico.
“We want to congratulate the State of Mexico’s government for this historic purchase of our RSHO™ CBD products to help improve the lives of its citizens,” said Medical Marijuana, Inc. President and CEO Dr. Stuart Titus. “We are excited about this new historic milestone of being the first company that the Government of Mexico has contracted to purchase and pay for cannabinoid CBD products to benefit its citizens.”
The State of Mexico’s government purchased RSHO-X™ from HempMeds Mexico® to treat 11 of its citizens who are suffering from varying indications including refractory epilepsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. This is the first time a government in Mexico has purchased CBD products for its citizens, subsidizing its full cost for the patients who received it.
Eruviel Avila, the State of Mexico’s Governor, distributed the RSHO-X™products purchased by the state to the 11 patients at the inauguration of a new clinic located in the city of Ecatepec on August 17, 2017. The media present at the event gave important exposure to HempMeds® Mexico and RSHO™ as the CBD oil industry leaders in the country.
News of the government’s purchase of RSHO-X™ for patients in the region comes shortly after the company cut the ribbon on its first home office in the country, located in the town of Monterrey. HempMeds® Mexico’s first local home office serves as its hub for its operations in the country. The office’s central geographic location functions as a strategic bridge between South, Central, and North America for San Diego-based Medical Marijuana, Inc.
A recent article in Vanity Fair featuring HempMeds® Mexico highlighted the company’s mission and the impact RSHO-X™ CBD oil has had on the quality of life for thousands of patients in Mexico so far.
“The plethora of benefits of cannabinoids (botanical as well as pharmaceutically developed) in treating multiple indications is now being researched, and we are encouraged to see significant anecdotal evidence leading the way,” remarked Dr. Titus. “Now, health care professionals and government health care agencies are becoming increasingly interested in how CBD hemp oil can help benefit many medical conditions, especially those conditions where conventional medicine has had modest effects.”
A pediatric researcher and neurologist based in Mexico, Dr. Saul Garza Morales, recently shared the positive results of a study he conducted on the effects of RSHO-X™ CBD oil in the treatment of children with severe refractory epilepsy. The results of the study showed that 86 percent of the 29 patients studied experienced statistically significant (greater than 50%) reduction in motor seizures. Seventeen percent of the children lived fully seizure free for a 4-month period. These results have drawn more patients to CBD oil to explore its potential benefits for their conditions.
RSHO-X™ became the first legally imported cannabis product into the country in February of 2016 when the Health Department of Mexico, COFEPRIS, issued the country’s first-ever government permits for the import and use of HempMeds® Mexico’s THC-free CBD products to two young girls suffering from seizures.
These historic first import permits were the entry point for HempMeds® products into the Mexican market and marked a turning point in Mexico’s medical cannabis policy, eventually leading to the legalization of cannabis products for medical purposes nationwide. Medical Marijuana, Inc. hosted and participated in a number of educational sessions and public debates on access to medical cannabinoids in the months leading up to this change in policy to help inform Mexico’s 120 million citizens, health officials, and lawmakers on the benefits of therapeutic cannabis.
Now patients across Mexico can apply to COFEPRIS to import CBD oil products from HempMeds® Mexico for difficult to treat conditions like epilepsy and cancer with a doctor’s prescription. Patients in Mexico interested in importing CBD oil products should visit the HempMeds® Mexico website, call (81) 800 004 54, or email the company’s support team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
